Search by Keyword or Code

Enter:

  • Description keywords (e.g. insurance, refrigerator, bakery)
  • Parts of a word (e.g. dent matches dental, dentist, and student)
  • Business Activity Code, NAICS, or SIC code numbers
  • The beginning of code numbers (e.g. 33993 matches 339931 and 339932)

When searching the IRS Business Activity Code database, there are several options for entering your search term(s). The simplest search consists of a string of letters “dent” or a single word, “dentist” or part of a code number, e.g., “8021” – the SIC code for dentists. Our search engine looks for any occurrence of these letters, word, or code within the database. For example, “dent” would return terms with dental and dentist, as well as residential and accidental. The codes included in the database are the IRS Business Activity Codes, the NAICS codes, and the SIC codes.

To limit the search to only complete words, choose the Find whole words only option. Entering “dentists” and choosing this option will return only those codes where the description has that specific word.

More complex searches involve multiple words or character strings and combinations of character strings and numbers, where these terms can be used with logical operators ‘AND’ and ‘OR’. ‘AND’ is the default setting. Check Combine search terms with OR instead of AND to change this setting.

Examples:
String of letters search

Example: enter dent

Retrieves any Business Activity Code that has the letters “dent” anywhere in the description or that has a linked NAICS or SIC description containing the string "dent". Note that instances of "dentist" and “dental” would be found as well as “residential”.
Single word search

Example: enter dentist and check option Find whole words only

Retrieves any Business Activity Code that has “dentist” in the description or that has a linked NAICS or SIC description containing the word "dentist". Note that instances of "dentist" would be found but not "dentistry" or “dental”.
Multiple string of letters search using AND operator

Example: enter dent and manuf

Retrieves any Business Activity Code that includes both the strings “dent” and “manuf” in the description or that has a linked NAICS or SIC description containing the strings "dent" and “manuf”. The use of AND as an operator makes the search more targeted. Using AND is the default for searching with multiple strings or words or codes.
Multiple string of letters search using OR operator

Example: enter automo and car and check option: Use OR instead of AND

Retrieves any Business Activity Code that has either the string “automo” or “car” in the description or that has a linked NAICS or SIC description containing either the string "automo" or “car”. This would retrieve any references to automotive, automobile, or car in the database. It would also include references to carbon.
Multiple word search using AND operator

Example: enter dental and manufacturing and check option: Find whole words only

Retrieves any Business Activity Code that includes both the string “dental” and “manufacturing” in the description or that has a linked NAICS or SIC description containing the strings "dental" and “manfacturing”. This would return

339114 Dental Equipment and Supplies Manufacturing
and
325620 Dental Floss Manufacturing
Multiple word search using OR operator

Example: enter automotive and car and check options: Find whole words only and Use OR instead of AND

Retrieves any Business Activity Code that includes either the string “automotive” or “car” in the description or that has a linked NAICS or SIC description containing either the string " automotive " or “car”.
Multiple string and code search using AND operator

Example: enter dental and 33

Retrieves any Business Activity Code that includes both the string “dental” and the number “33” in the description or Business Activity Code, or that has a linked NAICS or SIC description containing the string "dental" and the number “33”. This would return

339114 Dental Equipment and Supplies Manufacturing
